Raven, On the Wing is in hommage to a Norse folk tale that features the two ravens of Oden, Hugen and Mugen, that travelled the world collecting and retrning information to Oden, like a natural or supernatural version of the internet. This wing-tip of a raven was envisioned after hearing that the Junior Oxford English Dictionary was removing the word 'raven' to make space for technical words. In a world where children not only need to embrace technology but also the natural world, the artist wanted to acknowledge the importance of the raven in our cultural history and language. The piece was created by knitting silk-wrapped stainless steel and animated by lacing an acrylic-wrapped copper wire armature.

ABOUT THE ARTISAN
Her pieces incorporate knitting, felting, basketry, embroidery, quilting and rug hooking working with many natural fibres including metal and wire. Based on a practice of using whatever technique will achieve the desired essential aesthetic, she moves fluently between techniques and media.
